Hey, friends! It's way past my bedtime, but working on Words over Swords just gives me so much energy and powerful ideas, it's hard to shut down for the night.
A few minutes ago, I put out a note on the Substack feed with a suggestion for Substack to add a donate button. I'm hoping the algorithm gets it to the right people.
My thought goes something like this:
What if, in addition to people being able to buy a creator a cup of coffee (tip a creator, essentially), a feature Substack currently offers, there was also an option to donate to a non-profit organization of the creator’s choice?
I’m not interested in monetizing my work, but I would absolutely use a donate link or button to contribute to a local or regional non-profit (places that need the money, not huge national and global organizations).
What do y'all think? Would you use a donate button? Let me know. And then let @Substack know.
It's up to us to better the world. Who’s in?
Happy Friday! 🙏💛
Update 3/26/25: I’ve taken this idea and run with it. See my essay “On Giving Tzedakah” posted 3/25/25. The Give Tzedakah option will be available beginning April 1, 2025.
It sounds like a good idea - why not? (But I haven't even figured out how to add the 'buy me a coffee ' button. Do you have to have some form of paid subscription available to do that?
